Brown Rice Baby Cereal

Brown Rice Baby Cereal
Rice cereal is a popular choice for baby food and can be offered from 4-6 months old. It's easy to make your own nutritious rice cereal using nothing but brown rice and water.

Brown rice cereal can be served on its own or with fruits such as mashed banana, blueberries or apple sauce mixed through it.

Brown rice is much more nutritious than white rice because it is a wholegrain which hasn't been highly processed and stripped of nutrients. When choosing rice products for babies try to avoid products made using white rice, which has far less nutritional value.

This cereal isn't just for babies. When mixed with fruits rice cereal becomes a delicious healthy treat, and brown rice is a complex carbohydrate which provides long lasting energy - just what a toddler needs!

Ingredients

  • 1/4 cup brown rice powder
  • 3/4 - 1 cup of water (depending on how thick you want the cereal)

Method

Put a few cups of brown rice into a food processor and process on high until it has been ground up into a fine powder. Depending on how sharp your blades are and the power of your food processor, this step could take anywhere from 5 - 20 minutes.

Once the brown rice has become a powder, put it through a sieve to ensure any large pieces of rice that may be remaining are removed.

Store rice powder in an airtight container in the fridge.

To make brown rice cereal, bring 3/4 - 1 cup (depending on how thick you want the cereal) of water to the boil in a saucepan.

When boiling, whisk in 1/4 cup of rice powder. Reduce to a simmer.

Simmer for a further 10 minutes, whisking constantly to keep it from sticking to the bottom.

Remove from heat and mix through any fruits or yoghurts you wish to add (this easy home made apple sauce works great).

Let cool for a few moments and serve.
