3 in 1 sand, fizz and slime

3 in 1 sand, fizz and slime
This fun sensory activity is easy to make and allows your kids to explore chemical reactions.

With three activities in one - soft sand, fizzy bubbles, and oozy slime - this one is sure to be a huge hit!

The sand is soft and easy to mold, and when you add vinegar it starts to fizz and bubble!

Once the fizzing has stopped you can mix it all up into a fun slime. This awesome slime will become thick when it's in motion and then ooze back into a thin liquid when it stops moving (thanks to the cornflour).

Please note that although the ingredients in this activity are all edible (it will not harm your toddler if they happen to put some in their mouths for a taste), I do not recommend letting them eat it.

Ingredients

  • 1/2 cup bicarb soda
  • 1/2 cup cornflour
  • 1/4 cup cooking oil
  • 8-12 drops food colouring (adjust amount if you want a more/less bright colour)
  • 1/4 cup vinegar

Method

Combine bicarb soda and cornflour in a bowl. Mix well.

In a separate cup/container, combine oil and food dye. Stir with a fork to break up the blobs of food dye (they won't mix well with the oil, that's fine).

Pour the oil into the dry ingredients and mix to combine. You should end up with a soft coloured sand that will hold its shape when pressed firmly together.

Pour into a tray for your kids to play with.

When you want to make some fizz, get a syringe or spoon for your little ones to add vinegar to the sand and watch it fizz up and bubble!

Once it has stopped fizzing, the slime that is left is fun to mix up and watch as it thickens then relaxes, depending on how much it is moving.
